From the light into the darkness
Across the soft oak leaves
Leaving my home, my hole
The safety of enclosure
To the wide
With some traveling companions
More alert, more alive
My feet hover lightly
Turning right
Want to go faster!
Use my wings…
Stiffness and lethargy abandoned
by the side of the trail
Is that a creature?
What beautiful light!
Where are we going?
I’m already there and there and now there.
Wait, where do I put my feet?
Oops, caught myself.
What’s up with my companion, following close behind?
Are we running now?
Only a few steps.
Know the road is long, wanderer, and there is no destination, only the journey
And maybe some grass or
a few white pine branches
Walking now, neck and shoulders relaxing—
one with the sky, through my love, into my body,
my strong back,
carrying her, protecting her
(except from mailboxes; then she’s on her own)
Into my heart
My gracious and expansive heart.
Into the earth, the faithful earth—
Covered in leaves and rocks and trees
Together traveling
